The order was for a gluten free mudcake, covered with black fondant that had the quilt-pattern embossed look, with silver and white sugar pearls at the intersections.
I then decided to make it a bit my own, complimenting the cake with custom sugar red roses and a handcrafted fondant plaque. I completed the cake with handmade fondant pearls around the bottom, just to complete the look ( as an FYI, I did not make each individual pearl – I used a pearl mould 😉 I’ve found using gumpaste works a lot better than fondant).
I am so pleased with the way it turned out. I’m still working on my confidence with covering a cake with fondant but I think I’m getting much better at it. The cake was filled and coated with chocolate ganache prior to layering on the fondant, which probably helped in getting a nice clean finish with crisp corner along the top. I reckon my roses are looking pretty good now too, although I still have to work on my time to make them a bit faster – currently sitting on about 40minute to produce one rose! You can’t see it in these shots, but i actually added a green calyx to each rose to make them look a bit more real.
The customer messaged me after the party to thank me for the cake – and complimented the fact that the cake didn’t even taste gluten free! Now that’s pretty special and I so appreciate hearing that kind of feedback 🙂 Makes all the late nights worthwhile!
