The Hoot Cake

Introducing my second fondant figurine, Hoot! I think I am starting to get the hang of fondant now. Although learning from last week’s Bananas figurines, I decided to mix this 50-50 with gumpaste to help it ‘set up’ better.  Unfortunately for me, because I am slow, the figurine got a few cracks while I was working on it. Took me a few attempts to get the body shape just right, and I ended up adding extra glucose syrup to try keep it workable.

The buttons were the easiest task – using a silicon mould I got from eBay I managed to get them all done with little fuss. Sure, it took a bit of time but at least they were stress-free 🙂

The cake itself was 2 layers of chocolate sponge torted to 4 layers. Filled and coated with vanilla buttercream. All the adornments were fondant based. Technically, the entire cake and topper is edible except I admit I did end up using a couple toothpick fragments to hold Hoot’s wings in place 🙂 Hoot, Hoot, Yeah!
